Basic surgical incisions, flap management & suturing techniques: A Hands-on workshop

Utilizing pig jaws, this course will review incisions utilized for surgical access around the natural dentition, for access in an edentulous area for GBR, and for harvesting and recipient bed development in gingival augmentation procedures. The participant will learn techniques for flap elevation, flap positioning and suturing for closure. Anatomical considerations associated with flap elevation, periosteal fenestration and incision closure will be reviewed. The participant will learn how to coronally advance a flap, reposition a flap, apically position a flap and harvest and prepare a recipient bed for a gingival graft. Surgical instrumentation, materials utilized in GBR, and various suture materials will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Review the rationale for surgical access.
Learn how to make incisions for surgical access.
Learn how to elevate a flap
Learn how to place and stabilize a barrier membrane for GBR
Learn the technique for periosteal fenestration for flap advancement.
